Suspect in Maine mass shooting found dead

A man suspected by US police of killing 18 people in Maine has been found dead. The body of 40-year-old Robert Card was found near a recycling center. According to the version of the investigation, he could have committed suicide. The search for the perpetrator lasted three days.

“Like many others, I breathed a sigh of relief today realizing that Robert Card is no longer a threat to anyone. I know there are many people who share that feeling, but I also know that his death may not bring comfort to many. But now is a time of healing,” said Maine Governor Janet Mills.

Police suspect Robert Card is responsible for the Oct. 25 mass shooting at a restaurant and bowling alley in the town of Lewiston. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 76.

The man was a shooting instructor who had previously served in the U.S. Army. He was being treated at a mental health facility in the summer of 2023.

The tragedy in the city of Lewiston was one of the most violent mass shooting incidents in the United States in recent times. According to the Gun Violence Archive organization, more than 15,000 people have died as a result of gun violence in the country since the beginning of this year alone.

As calculated in the Swiss Small Arms Survey, 393 million firearms are registered in the possession of private individuals in the United States. This translates into 120 guns for every 100 people in the country – more than in any other country.
