Trump has said he will make a decision on whether to participate in next week’s debate

Donald Trump says he will make a decision on whether to participate in next week’s debate of the Republican Party’s US presidential contenders.

“I’m going to make a decision on that. I haven’t completely ruled out participating. In many ways I’d like to do it because I generally enjoy it. But we’ll say everything next week,” he said in an interview with Newsmax TV.

“I know a lot of people are saying – he doesn’t have the guts. But I’ve been on CNN meeting with voters, where’s the next step,” Trump added.

The first debate for the Republican

Party’s 2024 US presidential contenders will be held on August 23. Trump is already well ahead of all his fellow party rivals, so he has no incentive to participate in the debate.

Support for the Republican nominee
Trump said he is not ready to pledge support in advance to any US presidential candidate who will be nominated by the Republican Party at the end of the primaries.

“Why would I sign such a pledge? There are some people I don’t support at all,” he said.

“There are two or three people I would not support as a candidate for president. So that’s the problem,” he added.

The Republican Party insists that its nominees for the US presidency sign a pledge to support whichever candidate receives the most votes in the primaries.

According to opinion polls, Trump is leading by a large margin among Republican contenders for the US presidency. However, the final presidential nominee will be nominated by the party following a series of primaries in the first half of 2024, when the merits of the criminal cases against Trump and the party convention will begin. Trump has previously faced criticism from Republicans who have accused him of departing from the party’s traditional values.

The next US presidential election is scheduled for November 2024. In addition to Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron Desantis, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are seeking the Republican Party nomination.
