The idea of establishing a recording award in the United States was first proposed in the mid-1950s when the first candidates were selected to install stars on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. In 1957, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Techniques was founded in the United States. This organization established an award called the Grammy in 1958.
The first Grammy ceremony was held on May 4, 1959. It was held in parallel in Los Angeles and New York. Awards were given in more than 20 categories for musical achievements of the previous year.
