Senator John Fetterman has been hospitalized

Democratic Senator John Fetterman is being treated at a leading military medical center for the effects of severe depression, according to his office.

The 53-year-old senator from Pennsylvania is now being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Washington, D.C., where he went on the recommendation of a congressional physician.

According to the senator’s office, Fetterman has suffered from lifelong depression, but the illness has worsened in recent weeks.

In November, Fetterman won election to the Senate, winning in a traditionally Republican district — he did so six months after suffering a massive stroke. The stroke had a negative effect on his speech. Approximately one-third of stroke patients suffer from depression.
