Migrants block Third Avenue in Manhattan
Dozens of migrants from Latin American countries are protesting outside the building where Senator Chuck Schumer’s office is located. Protesters blocked Third Avenue, with protesters staging a “sit-in” right in the middle of the roadway. Police had to shut down traffic, causing a large traffic jam near the rally site. The police monitored the order, but did not disperse the protesters.
As the protesters explained, they demand that Schumer raise the issue of simplifying the procedure for granting citizenship to migrants in Congress. Some of the protesters have been in the U.S. for many years, but they still cannot become citizens and thus enjoy a number of rights due to them. “We are tired of waiting, we want citizenship now.
The U.S. maintains fairly lenient regulations on migrants that make it difficult to deport them, even if they are in the U.S. illegally. Attempts by former U.S. President Donald Trump to change this state of affairs have had little success. However, being able to stay in the U.S. is far from a matter of obtaining citizenship.
