Microsoft announced the impending layoff of 10,000 employees

The technology giant Microsoft has become the next major industry company to announce significant job cuts: the company intends to lay off 10,000 workers, or about 5 percent of its workforce.

The cuts at Microsoft were announced amid a new round of layoffs at Amazon, which will affect 18,000 employees at the e-commerce leader.

Twitter, Salesforce and dozens of smaller tech companies have also announced major layoffs in recent weeks.

The phenomenon of job cuts in the tech sector has been felt particularly acutely in Silicon Valley and other tech hubs on the U.S. West Coast, but it is also global.

The layoffs.fyi website, which tracks layoffs in the technology sector, has identified more than 100 companies that have announced layoffs since Jan. 1 in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

In total, the site counted more than 1,200 companies that have announced layoffs since the start of 2023.
