Former Senator Joe Lieberman has passed away at the age of 82

Former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman has died at age 82 from complications from a fall, his family said.

Lieberman nearly became vice president under Democrat Al Gore during a bitter fight for the White House in 2000.

Eight years later, he was close to becoming the vice presidential nominee under Republican nominee John McCain.

The Democrat turned independent left the Senate in January 2013 after 24 years in the chamber.
