Donald Trump appeals court ruling in civil fraud case

Donald Trump filed an appeal against the decision of the court of the state of New York in the case of fraud in the Trump Organization.

Trump’s lawyers ask the appeals court to check whether the judge Arthur Engoron did not commit “legal or legal errors” in the sentencing and did not exceed his authority.

On February 16, the court found Trump guilty in a civil case of fraud in the valuation of Trump Organization assets and ordered him to pay about $355 million. In addition, Trump was banned for three years from “serving as an officer or director of any corporation in the state of New York” and “applying for loans from any financial institution incorporated in the state of New York.” Trump and his attorney Alina Habba immediately said they would appeal the decision.

On Feb. 23, new documents were filed with the court filing that showed that the total fine Trump must pay in the case rose from $355 million to $454 million, including interest.

The lawsuit was filed in court in September 2022. According to the prosecutors’ version, the Trump Organization provided incorrect information about the value of assets in order to get more favorable conditions on loans and insurance. The value of assets was overstated by the amount from $2.23 billion to $3.6 billion. As the agency insists, the value of Trump’s estate in Florida, his apartments in the Trump Tower skyscraper in Manhattan, a number of office buildings and golf courses were overstated.

Lawyers insist that the accusations are groundless and the price of the property could have changed over time due to objective circumstances.
