Congressmen backed a bill to possibly ban TikTok in the country
The U.S. House of Representatives has supported the bill on a possible ban on the social network TikTok in the country.
The initiative aims to sever the platform’s ties with any “PRC-controlled entity,” including ByteDance, which now owns TikTok. There were 352 members of the lower house of Congress in favor of the bill, with 65 congressmen opposed.
Lawmakers propose to give ByteDance six months to sell the social network, otherwise a ban on TikTok in the US could follow. The Congress also made a proposal to impose the same restrictive measures for any “adversary-controlled apps” in the future.
The initiative will then be sent to the U.S. Senate for consideration. President Joe Biden earlier said he would sign the bill if it is approved by lawmakers.
The social network TikTok, which allows you to upload short videos, was launched in 2017, its international version – in August 2018. Previously, representatives of the American administration have repeatedly expressed the opinion that the Chinese social network poses a threat to the United States, which must be eliminated in one way or another. According to Washington’s version, the Chinese authorities and intelligence services can collect information, including in the United States, with the help of this social network.
