BMW has developed a unique electric boat Icon
BMW has decided on an experiment that is not quite usual for its specifics, presenting an all-electric, ultramodern hydrofoil boat. The vessel, named Icon, offers comfortable water travel at speeds of up to 35 mph. In addition to BMW itself, the shipbuilding firm TYDE and the composer Hans Zimmer took part in its development.
Externally the novelty design reminds more an airplane than a boat. Thanks to the “orangery”, occupying the space from the base of the hull to the wing-shaped roof. The unusual shapes are added by chic interior, where the furniture, perfectly matching the triangular concept of the salon, is used. The windows, rising from the floor, are equipped with a special system that directs light onto the carpet, creating a kaleidoscope-like effect.
And yet there’s something automotive about this boat – the latest intuitive control system, including a sports-style steering wheel and a 32-inch 6K HMI touchscreen supporting BMW’s proprietary OS 8, which provides digital data display and control via voice commands. The on-board batteries have enough capacity to cover 55 miles of the trip. Composer Hans Zimmer has developed a soundtrack that passengers can enjoy while traveling thanks to the Dolby Atmos system.
