Biden: We Must Protect the Achievements Our Policies Have Brought

Speaking to a locksmith union in Springfield, Virginia, President Joe Biden said that he would veto all Republican proposals that he said were dangerous to the U.S. economy.

Recall that Republicans have put forth proposals on strategic oil reserves, corporate tax cuts and the federal sales tax.

“They want to raise gasoline prices. They want tax cuts for billionaires. They want a 30 percent federal sales tax. While I’m in office, that’s not going to happen, I’m going to veto anything they propose to us.” – Biden said.

In his first major speech this year on the economy, the White House leader highlighted the administration’s economic accomplishments, including the creation of more manufacturing jobs and low unemployment.

Recall that Republicans took control of the House of Representatives after winning a slim majority in last November’s midterm elections. In the Senate, Democrats retained a majority.

The president has said that the Republican-led MAGA economic plan is a threat to the country’s economic progress.

Recall that MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) is the slogan of supporters of former Republican President Donald Trump, whom Biden defeated in the 2020 election.

“We must protect the gains that our policies have brought, protect them from MAGA Republicans in the House who threaten to destroy that progress,” the president said.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tweeted that Biden should “set a date to discuss responsibly raising the national debt ceiling.”

Under Biden, the economy has faced inflation, which is now on the decline, as have fears that a recession is imminent. Gross domestic product grew 2.9 percent year over year in the fourth quarter of last year, exceeding expectations, the Commerce Department reported.
