Biden decided to leave the G7 leaders' dinner early to discuss the U.S. government debt situation
President Joe Biden decided to leave the dinner of the Group of Seven (G7) leaders on Miyajima Island near Hiroshima early because of the need to discuss the situation around the national debt ceiling in the United States with his aides. This was reported by the White House press pool, citing U.S. administration spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre.
“Spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said the president will leave the dinner early, although he will attend part of it. Then, she said, the plan is to get an update from his negotiating team, which is in Washington, D.C., where it is morning, on the national debt ceiling,” the report said.
According to the press pool, Biden arrived for dinner at 6:55 p.m. local time and left about an hour later.
Washington administration officials had already briefed Biden on Friday on progress in consultations to prevent a U.S. default. The U.S. leader spoke by phone for about half an hour with his administration officials who are involved in talks with Republicans in Washington about raising the U.S. national debt ceiling to prevent a default in the country.
