Albedo Space satellites will be able to photograph anyone right from orbit

When asked what is more important – privacy or security – the startup Albedo Space answers the question that its satellites will photograph people from space without violating privacy. In other words, they will have no facial recognition system. In a Hacker News forum, Albedo Space CEO Topher Haddat explained that the company is “acutely aware of the privacy implications and potential for abuse of its technology.”

Albedo Space’s satellites will orbit 75 miles from Earth and will be used for disaster zone mapping, infrastructure monitoring, urban planning, and defense. At the same time, the capabilities of the satellite systems allow them to see the face of every single person on earth.

According to experts, such a satellite constellation can easily be used in the interests of the government to suppress protests and other activities undesirable to the authorities, which inevitably entails a breach of confidentiality.

Albedo Space plans to launch its first satellite next year, gradually increasing the constellation to 20 vehicles. Then it will become clear how sincere the assurances of the company’s management were.
