Named a tool that reduces the risk of death in women with COVID-19

The drug Metformin, used to treat type 2 diabetes, may reduce the risk of death in women with COVID-19. This is stated in a study by scientists from the University of Minnesota Medical school, published in the Lancet.

Experts analyzed data from 6,256 patients, of whom 2,333 took Metformin.

As a result, in people who had not previously taken the drug, the mortality rate during hospitalization was 20.2%. In the other group, 16.9% of patients died. In addition, patients who were prescribed Metformin prior to admission, the risk of death was 21-24% less than men.

“Metformin increases the level of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 while reducing the inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and cytokine IL-6 in people with diabetes or without it”, — stated in the work.

Scientists believe that the results of their observations can help in developing more effective methods of treating COVID-19.
