At the Monticello nuclear power plant there was a leak of radioactive water

A leak of more than 400,000 gallons of water containing tritium, a radioactive hydrogen isotope, occurred in November 2022 at the Monticello nuclear power plant in Minnesota.

Xcel Energy discovered and contained the leak at the Monticello nuclear power plant late last November, but the information was not made public until this Thursday.

“If there had been public safety concerns at any point, we certainly would have provided more information immediately,” said Xcel Energy spokeswoman Chris Clark.

Xcel said about 25 percent of the spilled tritium has been recovered so far, and the cleanup process is ongoing. State officials wanted more information about the spill before making it public.
