In China, the world's largest container ship is launched

Every feature of the MSC Tessa container ship built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) on behalf of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is impressive: a deck area of nearly four soccer fields, which will accommodate 2,4116 containers, and a load capacity of over 240,000 tons.

Unlike supertankers, giant container ships have their own disadvantages – restrictions on port calls for unloading. Not every port is capable of receiving such vessels (tankers can discharge fuel and refuel at special tanker terminals while standing on the roads).

Creators of the super container ship staked on efficiency – and first of all, on the innovative “air lubrication” system which allows decreasing hull resistance and energy consumption. Besides efficiency increase this technology allows to reduce emissions (motor vessel power plant is operated by diesel fuel) almost by 5%.

By the end of the summer MSC will receive three more CSSC container ships, two of which have already undergone sea trials. The cost of their construction was $600 mln.
