The number of people infected with coronavirus in the world exceeds 520 million

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the world has exceeded 520 million and the number of deaths – 6.27 million, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Wednesday.

The WHO reported 520,372,492 infected and 6,270,232 deaths since the pandemic began. The number of those infected increased by 606,079 and the number of fatalities by 1,542 over 24 hours.

The WHO statistics include only officially confirmed data on the infected and the dead provided by the states. It reached 500 million on April 14, 400 million on February 10, 300 million on January 8, and 200 million on August 5 of last year.

The United States has the most confirmed cases reported to the WHO, with 81,824,843. It was followed by India (43,127,199), Brazil (30,701,900), France (28,372,414) and Germany (25,890,456). The U.S. has the most fatalities with 992,667, followed by Brazil (664,987) and India (524,293). Russia (377,975) and Mexico (324,617) follow.

According to the WHO in its weekly epidemiological bulletin published Wednesday, there were 3,699,960 cases of covid worldwide and 9,806 deaths during the week of May 9 to 15. Morbidity was up 1 percent from the previous seven days, and deaths were down 21 percent. Particularly strong increases were recorded in the eastern Mediterranean (63%) and deaths increased significantly in Africa (48%).
