U.S. intends to seek new sanctions against North Korea at UN Security Council

The U.S. seeks to impose new restrictive measures against North Korea over its missile launches through the mechanisms of the UN Security Council, including halving oil exports to the country. This was reported by Reuters.

A draft was circulated this week among the 15 member countries of the Security Council. According to the document, the U.S. also calls for a ban on exports of tobacco products to North Korea and impose sanctions against a hacking group affiliated with the country, known as Lazarus.

The CTAC news agency reported in late March that the DPRK had tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-17 ICBM, on direct orders from the country’s leader Kim Jong-un. According to the North Korean side, it flew about 1,090 km, and its maximum flight altitude was 6,248 km.

After that, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, said at a meeting of the Security Council that she intended to propose strengthening the sanctions regime against the DPRK for consideration.
