U.S. may abandon some nuclear weapons programs
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is considering closing several nuclear weapons programs approved under Donald Trump. The debate over the country’s nuclear arsenal is entering its final phase.
The nuclear policy review, which is expected to be completed as early as February, is not likely to make major changes to nuclear policy. However, in the area of national security, there are discussions about the advisability of abandoning the development of a new cruise missile with a nuclear warhead, which is now in the research phase.
Also, there is discussion of scrapping the Cold War-era thermonuclear bomb and even abandoning the new “low-yield” warhead that the previous administration deployed on submarines.
The abandonment of the “add-ons” of the Trump era, as they are called, is considered most likely because President Biden wants to abandon the increased role of nuclear weapons in U.S. strategy that occurred under the previous administration.
