Election 2024

U.S. voters think Biden is too old for re-election

The vast majority of American voters consider US President Joe Biden “too old” to be re-elected for a second term.

According to the survey, 73% of respondents believe that Biden is “too old” to go for a second term. Only 36% of those polled believe the president is “mentally fit” for re-election. Former U.S. leader Donald Trump, who is only three years younger than Biden and is also up for re-election, is considered too old for a second term by 47% of those polled.

The poll found that just 42% of voters have a favorable view of Biden’s performance as president. 59% of respondents are dissatisfied with the state of the economy, 63% of respondents are concerned about rising inflation, and the same number are concerned about security at the country’s borders. More than half of respondents are dissatisfied with Biden’s foreign policy: 57% criticize the actions of his administration in relations with China, and 52% disapprove of his policy regarding the Ukrainian crisis. According to pollster Michael Bochian, “voters want change, and none of the leading presidential contenders are offering it to them.” The poll was conducted on August 24-30 among 1.5 thousand participants. The margin of error amounted to 2.5 p.p.

Earlier, a survey of the Center for Public Affairs Research AP-NORC showed that Americans are increasingly in favor of the younger generation in power in the country. 68% of respondents supported imposing age limits on candidates for U.S. senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives, while 66% supported age limits on presidential candidates.

Biden will turn 80 years old in November 2022. He often finds himself in awkward situations and makes various disclaimers in his public speeches. Republicans use this in a partisan battle to question the head of state’s mental and physical ability to continue to lead the United States. Biden announced in April that he would run for another term in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. If re-elected, he will begin his second term at the age of 82.
