Trump called to testify in former porn actress payments case

The District Attorney’s Office in New York has summoned former U.S. President Donald Trump to testify in the case of payments to former porn actress and stripper Stephanie Clifford (a.k.a. Stormy Daniels), which could mean the politician will face charges soon.

The district attorney’s office told lawyers for the former president that Trump could face criminal charges for paying Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about her ties to him. The prosecutor’s office has offered the former White House head to testify next week. As the publication notes, Trump can refuse, and his lawyers will meet with prosecutors on their own to discuss possible charges. If they are filed, it would be the first indictment against a former U.S. president and would affect Trump’s chances of retaking the presidency in 2024.

“The district attorney’s threat to indict former President Trump is insane. It’s an embarrassment to Democratic prosecutors and to New York,” said a Trump spokesman.

Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels $130,000 a month before the November 2016 U.S. election to keep information about an intimate relationship with the politician a secret. They allegedly took place back in 2006. Cohen himself admitted that he paid Clifford out of his own money and without Trump’s knowledge. Clifford has filed a lawsuit against Trump and Cohen, seeking an annulment of the agreement that required her to withhold the information.
