Toyota is testing car filters to collect CO2 while driving

New versions of the Toyota GR Corolla will have special filters in the front of the body that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It is not used in any way in the operation of the car, but is simply pumped into the fluid for subsequent utilization. All processes are carried out through the use of heat from the heated engine.

This ingenious maneuver will allow Toyota to continue to use internal combustion engines with their emissions into the atmosphere, offsetting the harm by the fact that in the process of their work part of the emissions is taken back. One trouble: the figures so far vary widely, with these filters taking no more than 20 grams of carbon dioxide out of the air for 20 laps around a race track. Whereas when burning a liter of fuel, thousands of grams of this substance are released into the atmosphere.

Representatives of Toyota admit that they have gone to such a ruse not from a good life. The company is under pressure from supporters of the “green agenda” and the requirements of the authorities of various countries to decarbonize the automotive industry. However, the demand for electric cars is not growing, and in their current form they are suitable for operation in a very narrow range of climatic conditions and not in all countries. Toyota estimates that it will be able to bring the share of electric cars to a maximum of 30% of total sales. Therefore, they have to look for workarounds for the continued operation of internal combustion engine vehicles.
