The world’s first whole eye transplant has been performed in the US
In the USA, doctors have performed the world’s first transplant of an entire eye to a patient. The patient was Aaron James, a 46-year-old former military man from Arkansas, who suffered a high-voltage electric shock. The incident damaged the left side of his face, including his eye, as well as his nose and mouth.
The surgery, which lasted 21 hours, was performed by more than 140 surgeons, nurses and medical staff.
According to a press release from Lagon Medical Center, the transplanted eye showed “remarkable signs of health,” but it is not yet known if the patient will be able to see with it.
