Texas created special units to protect the border with Mexico

Texas authorities have created a special border unit within the state’s National Guard to combat illegal migration, Governor Greg Abbott said in an interview.

He gave a press conference at an airfield where planes and helicopters fly the “Texas Tactical Border Patrol Unit” to the most vulnerable parts of the border with Mexico.

“They will be deployed to the most difficult areas on the border to intercept, repel and return migrants who are trying to enter Texas illegally. We’ve already seen a number of examples where the National Guard has handled similar tasks, but we will transform such activities into a full-fledged operation,” Abbott said.

He added that the new unit is equipped with everything it needs to effectively handle the tasks at hand. “This includes aircraft, boats, night vision equipment, and crowd control equipment,” the governor listed.

Abbott spoke disparagingly of the 1,500 troops being sent to the U.S. border with Mexico by federal authorities in anticipation of repealing “Section 42,” a rule that allowed authorities to expel migrants under the pretext of fighting the coronavirus. He said the military would be doing “paperwork” and illegal migration rates would be at record highs again this year.
