Suspect in attack on police officers in Times Square accused of attempted murder
New York police have arrested a man on charges of attempted murder during a machete-wielding attack on police officers in the Times Square neighborhood on New Year’s Eve.
Trevor Bickford, wounded two officers in the screening area on the approach to Times Square, set up to protect New Year’s Eve festivities. The suspect struck one officer with a machete blade and hit the other officer in the head with the handle.
During the altercation, police shot the suspect in the shoulder. The suspect and the wounded officers were hospitalized.
The attack occurred two hours before New Year’s Eve, causing people nearby to flee to safety. Celebrations in Times Square continued after the incident.
Police are looking into the suspect’s online posts, some of which included references to Islamic extremist views.
