Rolex has released a diver’s watch that will work even at the bottom of the Mariana Trench

World-renowned watchmaker Swiss company Rolex has unveiled a unique Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge diver’s watch that will work even at the bottom of the Mariana Trench at a depth of 11,000 meters.

The Deepsea Challenge was based on an experimental watch aboard the submersible in which filmmaker James Cameron dived into the Mariana Trench 10 years ago.

The new model is almost a third lighter than its prototype and has a huge margin of safety – enough to withstand a depth of 15 km, or a load of 17 tonnes. The titanium case has a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of 23 mm.

The watch is equipped with a rotating bezel and the dial is covered by a 9.5-mm-thick sapphire crystal. The winding crown also has a built-in escape valve that allows helium trapped in the watch while it is in the pressure chamber to escape. This protects the movement from damage during decompression.

Housed inside the case is a self-winding movement with 31 rubies, powered by a bidirectional perpetual rotor. The Deepsea Challenge is accurate to +/- 2 seconds per day. The indexes on the matt black dial are made of 18 Ct gold with chrome backlighting.
