One lottery ticket won a record two billion dollars
The Powerball lottery announced Tuesday that a lottery ticket purchased in California won a jackpot of $2.04 billion. This is the biggest win in U.S. lottery history, as well as a lottery world record.
The prize reached such a huge value because no one could guess all of the lottery numbers correctly for 40 draws, over a period of more than 3 months.
The odds of guessing all six numbers in the draw were 1 in 292.2 million.
The lucky owner of the winning ticket, whose identity is not disclosed, has a choice: Get the lump sum of $997.6 million in cash or get the entire amount in 29 annual payments.
So far, little is known about the lucky ticket holder. Powerball lottery officials said the ticket was purchased in the town of Altadena, California, at Joe’s Auto Service Center.
News of the win came after Monday night’s drawing was postponed, and then an erroneous message appeared on Twitter on behalf of the lottery that no one had won this time either. This added drama to the record jackpot story.
The previous Powerball jackpot record was set in 2016, when three ticket holders from California, Florida and Tennessee shared the top prize of $1.59 billion.
