NATO launches annual exercise of nuclear forces in Europe

NATO has launched annual exercises of nuclear forces in northwest Europe amid tensions caused by the war in Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use all means to defend Russian territory.

Fourteen of NATO’s 30 member states are taking part in the exercise. About 60 aircraft, including fighters, spy planes and refueling planes, are involved in the maneuvers.

The main part of the exercise will take place at a distance of not less than a thousand kilometers from Russia’s borders.

American long-range B-52 bombers also take part in the maneuvers called Steadfast Noon.

The exercise, which is not open to the press, will continue until October 30.

The exercises were planned even before Putin ordered Russian troops into Ukraine in February.

Russia also usually conducts similar maneuvers around this time of year.
