Nancy Pelosi expressed doubts about Trump testifying before Congress

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said former President Donald Trump is too cowardly to comply with a congressional subpoena to testify before a special committee investigating his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

“I don’t think he has the courage to appear. I don’t think his lawyers would want him to appear because he would have to testify under oath,” Pelosi told MSNBC.

The special committee announced Friday that it had subpoenaed Trump, giving him until Nov. 4 to produce a wide range of documents related to his activities before and after his supporters’ Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The committee also told Trump that he must appear to testify around Nov. 14.

Recall that Trump supporters tried to prevent Congress from officially confirming Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election and stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Since losing the 2020 election, Trump has insisted that he was the victim of widespread election fraud, even though the claim has been repeatedly refuted in the courts.

On the same day, Republican Party member Liz Cheney told NBC that Trump likely committed several felonies for which the Justice Department could prosecute him.

“We’ve been very clear about a number of different criminal offenses that are probably involved,” said Cheney, one of the two Republicans on the House Select Committee. – He has shown his willingness to use force to try to stop a peaceful transition of power.”

Cheney did not name specific criminal charges that the committee might recommend in an upcoming investigative report.

Cheney, who has lost her role within the Republican Party because of her criticism of Trump and because she lost the primary in 2022, said: “We have attached testimony that he admitted he lost the 2020 presidential election.”

“But even if he thought he won, you can’t send an armed mob into the Capitol. You can’t sit around for 187 minutes and refuse to stop an attack while it’s going on. You can’t send a tweet inciting further violence,” Cheney emphasized.

Liz Cheney would not say what the committee would do if Trump refused to testify.
