More than 3 million Americans left their homes because of natural disasters in 2022
More than 1.3 percent of U.S. adults were displaced by natural disasters last year, with more than half of the displacements caused by hurricanes.
The study found that 3.3 million American adults moved because of hurricanes, floods, fires, tornadoes or other natural disasters.
Some states were hit harder than others.
Nearly a million people, or about 1 in 17 adults, were displaced in Florida, the state hit by Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in the fall.
More than 409,000 people, or about one in eight residents, were displaced in Louisiana, which had a relatively calm hurricane season in 2022, although residents still had to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in 2021.
Of the 3.3 million displaced adults, more than a third returned to their homes in less than a week, but about a sixth never returned, the study said.
