Hacker hacked into Uber's U.S. computer network
The company Uber – a popular online car transportation service – suffered a cyber attack in the United States. This was reported by The New York Times, noting that the experts of the platform are trying to determine the causes of the incident and the extent of the damage.
The hacker himself, who claimed to be 18 years old, notified the employees of the company to break into the Uber computer network. In confirmation, he published screenshots of the company’s internal systems on the corporate portal. Uber had to shut down several internal communication systems and contact law enforcement officials.
According to the hacker, he decided to hack Uber because “they turned out to have too weak protection”. The attacker sent a text message to a company employee, convincing him that he was a corporate information technology specialist. Using social engineering techniques, he persuaded the employee to give him a password that allowed him access to the company’s computer systems.
The online service, which operates in dozens of countries, allows private car drivers to use an app on a cell phone. The company, headquartered in San Francisco, California, was founded by entrepreneurs Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp in 2009. Its market capitalization is currently $65.6 billion.
