Donald Trump Seeking Delay in Classified Documents Case

Donald Trump asks the court to postpone the start of the trial on the mishandling of classified documents. This is stated in a statement published in the base of the Federal Court for the Southern District of Florida.

As noted in the document, Trump asks to start the trial after the end of the presidential elections in 2024. The US special prosecutor Jack Smith proposes to start the trial on July 8.

Employees of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation seized a total of 102 documents during the search, which took place in August 2022 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida: 27 were in the office, another 75 in the pantry. Seventeen of them were marked “top secret”.

Donald Trump claims that there was no wrongdoing on his part because, as head of state, he had the authority to declassify all the documents in his possession. The former president, who will run again for the highest office in next year’s elections, characterizes the accusations against him as a purely political decision inspired by the US authorities led by Joe Biden. Some other prominent figures of the Republican Party also accuse the current administration of politicizing the case.
