The new leadership of the Republican Party is firing RNC staffers

The newly elected leadership of the Republican National Committee (RNC), supported by former President Donald Trump, has begun the process of firing 60 officials of the organization.

The 60 positions are being eliminated to ensure the RNC and Trump’s campaign are streamlined and to avoid duplication of work.

Employees in the political, communications and data departments are being laid off. In January, the Republican committee had at least 208 staffers, according to the group’s monthly filing with the Federal Election Commission on Feb. 20.

The Republican National Committee will play a key role in raising voters and funds in the Nov. 5 presidential general election.

Last week, RNC members voted to appoint North Carolina Republican Party head Michael Watley and Lara Trump as the organization’s chairman and co-chairman.

Not since President Ronald Reagan’s daughter Maureen served as RNC co-chair in the 1980s has a family member of a U.S. president or presidential candidate held such a high office.

One of the most pressing challenges for the new leadership is finding money. The year 2023 saw the lowest level of funds raised in a decade. Federal documents show the RNC had less than $9 million in the bank at the end of January, just a little more than a third of the $24 million held by the Democratic National Committee.
