Aliens can easily map Earth by cell phone signals
Researchers from the University of Manchester have calculated that even with imperfect human technology can detect signs of an extraterrestrial civilization at a distance of 10 light years by the radiation of household devices. More precisely, exactly the opposite – if the aliens have at least similar to our radio telescopes, they have long found Earth by radio emissions from our cell phones. And not just found it, but studied it in detail.
In 2023, there will be 7.6 billion cell phones and 10.9 billion mobile connections. Together, this creates a 4 GW radio signal that reaches far into space. It is difficult to detect over long distances, but the radiation is growing. By the end of the decade, there will be about 100 thousand satellites circling the Earth, which makes our planet very bright in the radio range throughout the near space – it is not difficult to find it.
Even more interesting, the signals are distributed very irregularly around the planet, which gives the outside observer important information. Thus, he will understand that there is life only on land, and the vast dark areas in the radio band – the oceans – are unsuitable for the local life form. He will be able to find all the major cities, trace major transport routes, analyze traffic and draw conclusions about the population in different regions, and even do some rough cartography. And all this at a distance of many light years – we shouldn’t be surprised if the aliens probably already know quite a lot about us.
