Hollywood screenwriters will hold the first strike in 15 years
New York, May 2.
Hollywood screenwriters have unanimously approved the decision to go on strike for the first time in 15 years to seek better labor contract terms. The Writers Guild of America West union announced this on its Twitter page on Monday.
The decision to go on strike comes after six weeks of negotiations with Netflix, Amazon, The Walt Disney, Paramount and Apple TV for new agreements and wage increases.
As CNN notes, the strike could last several months. The last strike by screenwriters was in 2007, lasted 100 days and caused $3 billion in damages to the industry. The union represents the interests of 11,500 screenwriters. The strike could lead to a stoppage of production of new TV programs, series and movies.
