Biden announces $645 million for Western Hemisphere aid

The United States intends to allocate $645 million in financial assistance to solve the problems of the American region in the near future. President Joe Biden announced this during a speech at the plenary session of the Summit of the Americas.

“In the next few days, we will announce more than $645 million in vital assistance to address food security in the region, to respond to disasters, and to refugee and migrant flows that have reached historic proportions,” he said.

Biden also noted that “every country in the region has been affected by unprecedented migration,” and said it is a “shared responsibility” of all countries in the region to combat it.

The Summits of the Americas are meetings of hemispheric heads of state and government that take place every few years under the auspices of the Organization of American States, which has more than 30 participants. This year’s meeting is being organized by the United States in Los Angeles. Delegations from Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela were not invited to the meeting. The leaders of Mexico and several other Latin American countries decided not to participate in the summit.
