The U.S. will soon have its first road capable of charging electric cars on the go

Electreon announced the construction in the USA of the first highway with an integrated wireless charging system for electric vehicles. Detroit was chosen for the construction, the length of the special road is still limited to one mile. The project has an experimental character, its purpose is to find out the real operating conditions of such a system and to determine the benefits of such roads.

The road will receive electricity from the general network and transfer it to the charging coils under the overhead surface. The coils are individually connected; accidental damage will not cause a break in the grid. Vehicles will need to have an active receiver installed to receive power. Without contact with it, the road does not release energy, so there is no risk of electrocution of people and animals crossing the road.

The hardest part is calculating the payment for this service, since the amount of energy transmitted depends on the type of electric vehicle and its speed. The ideal option is public transport, which moves along the same routes and schedules, for which it is easiest to set up the system. Another practical option is roads with the maximum number of traffic jams, so that cars are charged while they are standing idle. But drivers should take into account that such a road, even if it is long, will not be able to fully charge the electric car.
