Groundhog Phil predicted another month and a half of winter

A traditional Groundhog Day ceremony was held in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s famous groundhog came out of his burrow and saw his shadow, thus announcing that winter will last another six weeks.

Phil from Punxsutawney made his prediction on Groundhog Day, which is Feb. 2, at a time when another winter storm could bring heavy snowfall and freezing rain to much of the country.

Thousands of people from the U.S. and other countries gathered in Punxsutawney when Phil was lured out of his burrow under a stump at dawn Wednesday to see if he would see his shadow. According to them, Phil relayed his message in the “surrogate’s” language.

After Phil’s prediction was announced, those gathered began chanting, “Six more weeks!”

According to the belief, if a groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, it means an early spring. Groundhog Day originated in the German legend of the furry rodent.
