The main Christmas tree was brought to New York

The main Christmas tree was successfully delivered on Saturday night in America’s largest metropolis, New York. It was reported by the city’s police.

“The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree arrived this morning with a little help from the New York City Traffic Police,” the law enforcement press office said in a Twitter post.

The tree, which weighs 12 tons and is 80 feet tall, was brought from Maryland – the first time in the 90-year history of the tradition of installing a Christmas tree in New York City. It required a 135-foot trailer to transport it to its installation site at Rockefeller Plaza in midtown Manhattan.

The transportation of one of the main symbols of Christmas took two days: the 85-year-old tree, which was cut down on Thursday, November 11, near the town of Elkton, needed a permit from the states of New Jersey and Maryland to transport such an oversized cargo, as well as the truck was accompanied by several special vehicles and an escort of police cars.

After the tree is installed, it will be garlanded with more than 50,000 multi-colored lights and topped with a 400-kilogram crystal star, created by the masters from Swarovski. The ceremony of lighting the lights on one of the main symbols of Christmas in New York will take place on December 1, the residents of the megalopolis will have an opportunity to admire it until January 16.

The tradition of installing a Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza dates back to the early 1930s. Workers who were building the Rockefeller Center complex first put a holiday tree right on the construction site in 1931. Then the six-meter Christmas tree was decorated with paper garlands and forest berries. The first ceremony of lighting Christmas lights took place there in 1933, since then the “forest beauty” began to be decorated with electric lights.
