Winter storm in the U.S. led to the cancelation of more than 2,000 flights
More than 2,000 flights were canceled in the US on Friday after a powerful winter storm caused power outages in 12 states and affected businesses.
As of 5:30 p.m. U.S. East Coast time, a total of 2,058 flights had been canceled and 5,846 flights were delayed, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.
Southwest Airlines canceled the most flights, 401, followed by SkyWest with 358 flights.
“We expect some issues due to weather in the Midwest today and possibly tomorrow,” Delta Airlines said.
Southwest Airlines said the weather could affect some flights to Chicago, Detroit and Omaha.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned that cloud cover, snow and wind could cause flight delays at some airports.
United Airlines canceled 287 flights, including those scheduled for Saturday, as it awaits regulatory approval to restart Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.
The carrier said it is operating some scheduled flights while replacing airplane types.
The FAA launched a formal investigation into the 737 MAX 9 after an emergency exit door cover panel ripped out in midair during an Alaska Airlines flight last week, leading to an emergency landing.
