Water temperatures off the southern tip of Florida have reached 100 °F for two days in a row, which meteorologists say may be the highest seawater temperature ever recorded.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said seawater temperature records are unofficial and may be disregarded under certain conditions.
Nevertheless, baseline data taken at a buoy in Manatee Bay on Monday night showed 101.12 °F.
Twenty-five miles from that location, scientists observed the devastating effects of prolonged exposure to warm water – coral bleaching and the death of some corals.
