U.S. intelligence agencies assess consequences of large-scale hacker attack

U.S. cybersecurity officials said they are assessing the impact of a large-scale hacking attack on servers around the world.

Thousands of computer servers around the world were subjected to a hacker ransomware attack, Italy’s national cybersecurity agency (ACN) said Sunday, warning organizations to take protective measures.

The Italian news agency ANSA, citing ACN, reported that servers were hacked in other European countries, particularly France and Finland, as well as in the United States and Canada.

“CISA is working with our public and private sector partners to assess the impact of these incidents and provide assistance as needed,” the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Agency said.

The hackers tried to exploit a vulnerability in the software, ACN CEO Roberto Baldoni told Reuters, adding that the attack was widespread.

Dozens of Italian organizations appear to have been affected, and many others have been warned to take action to avoid having their systems locked down.
