Trump will seek $100 million in damages because of the search in 2022

Donald Trump plans to demand through the court from the U.S. Department of Justice to compensate damages for $100 million for the search of the FBI in his estate Mar-a-Lago in the state of Florida in 2022.

Trump’s lawyers are convinced that “the apparent purpose of the search was political persecution” and that the FBI and DOJ’s actions violated a number of protocols.

“Justice Secretary Merrick Garland and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray should have made sure their agents sought Trump’s consent, notified his lawyers, and sought cooperation”.

They have already sent the Justice Department a notice of intent to sue in court. The agency will have 180 days from the date of receipt of the notice to settle the matter in a pre-trial order, otherwise the case will be sent to the Federal Court of the Southern District of Florida.

U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation officials seized a total of 102 documents during an August 2022 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. 27 of them were in an office and another 75 were in a storage room. Seventeen of them were labeled “top secret.”

In June 2023, a Miami court indicted the former president on charges of mishandling classified documents. Trump faced up to 400 years in prison and a large monetary fine. The former White House host himself claimed that he did not have time to return the documents because of the hurry and heavy workload. In July of this year, all charges in Trump’s criminal case on improper storage of classified documents were dismissed. Judge Eileen Cannon’s ruling specifies that the charges against Trump are dismissed because “the appointment of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith violated the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution.”
