Trump urged Americans to unite after the attempted assassination of him

Donald Trump said Sunday that he was saved from an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania by divine Providence and urged Americans to unite.

“Only God prevented the unthinkable,” the former president and likely Republican White House nominee said on social media, urging Americans to unite to “not let evil win.”

Trump was shot in the ear in an assassination attempt by a gunman at a campaign rally on Saturday. The 78-year-old former president was rushed off the stage with blood on his face after the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman and one rally attendee were killed. Two other people were critically wounded.

President Joe Biden said there is “no place in America for this kind of violence.”

“At this moment, it is more important than ever that we come together and show our true character as Americans by staying strong and resolute and not letting evil win”, Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth on Sunday morning, confirming that he will attend the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Secret Service on Sunday denied claims that it had refused to provide Trump with additional security ahead of his campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Platform X that the claims are “absolutely false,” adding that the agency has “added protective resources, technology and capabilities due to the increased pace of campaign travel.”

The FBI has officially identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The suspect was shot and killed by Secret Service agents seconds after Crooks allegedly fired a shot toward the stage where Trump was giving a speech to supporters.

The FBI is working to determine a motive for the attack.
