Trump intends to abolish birthright citizenship in the U.S. if he becomes president
Former U.S. President Donald Trump on the eve of the election campaign made a proposal to abandon the automatic granting of citizenship on the basis of the fact that a person was born in the country.
Trump wants to abolish this principle in order to combat illegal migrants and plans to issue a corresponding decree on the first working day in the White House. Such a decision would draw criticism from immigration advocates and lawyers. Most experts believe that the president has no such power and cannot “override this right” through an executive order.
Earlier, Trump, as American leader, called the said right “insane policy,” which costs the country’s budget billions of dollars every year. He noted that this practice has led to the emergence of so-called maternity tourism, a common phenomenon when pregnant foreign women go to give birth in the United States in order to obtain citizenship.
At the present time the American legislation provides for the acquisition of citizenship by birth or by the so-called right of soil. This provision is derived by legal scholars from the 14th amendment to the constitution which states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof shall be citizens of the United States and the state in which they reside.
