Thunderstorms in the eastern U.S. have killed two people

Severe thunderstorms in the eastern United States, accompanied by hail and lightning, have killed at least two people, canceled or delayed thousands of flights, and left more than 1.1 million homes and businesses without power.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Washington and surrounding areas.

Thunderstorms raged across a huge area of the US: tornado warnings were issued for ten states, from Tennessee to New York.

In Anderson, South Carolina, a 15-year-old visiting his grandparents during the storm died while getting out of his car when a tree fell on him. The incident was reported by the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.

In Florence, Alabama, a 28-year-old man died after being struck by lightning, WAAY-TV reported, citing police.

By Monday evening, more than 2,600 domestic flights had been canceled and about 7,900 flights were delayed, flight tracking service FlightAware said.
