The U.S. launched new strikes against Iranian-backed forces in Syria
The U.S. military said it retaliated against Iranian-backed forces in Syria after rocket attacks on two bases where Americans are stationed.
Two or three people believed to have been involved in one of the missile strikes were killed from attack helicopters, and three vehicles and equipment were destroyed, the U.S. Central Command said.
The operation was deployed after missile strikes on Conoco Combat Support Center and the vicinity of Green Village Combat Support Center, Central Command said.
One U.S. service member suffered a minor injury and returned to duty. Two others are being evaluated for their injuries.
The attacks and counterattack came a day after the U.S. military launched air strikes in eastern Syria against groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran has been a vocal supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during that country’s civil war, which began in 2011.
“The response has been proportionate and thoughtful,” Central Command said in a statement. – The United States does not seek conflict with Iran, but we continue to take the steps necessary to protect our people.”
Meanwhile, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with his Israeli counterpart Eyal Hulata and reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to ensuring that Iran never possesses nuclear weapons, the White House statement said.
