The Secret Service chief, Kimberly Cheatle, has resigned
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday announced the creation of a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination attempt on presidential candidate Donald Trump. Later that day, MSNBC reported that Secret Service chief Kimberly Cheatle had resigned.
The day before, speaking at a congressional hearing, Cheatle admitted that the attempted assassination attempt on Trump during a campaign rally was a failure of her agency.
“We failed. As director of the Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security breach,” she said.
“The July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump is the most significant failure of the Secret Service in decades,” she said.
Recall that on July 13, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump was shot in the ear. One of the participants of the rally was killed and another was wounded. The alleged shooter, 20-year-old nursing home worker Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers.
“The security failures that allowed an attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking. In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing the creation of a House task force of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate this matter,” Johnson and Jeffries’ statement emphasized.
According to the document, the task force will be empowered to send subpoenas for congressional testimony and “will act quickly to establish the facts, ensure accountability and make sure failures like this never happen again.”
On Wednesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray will testify before the House Judiciary Committee.
The task force created will make recommendations for reforms in relevant government agencies.
