The Biden administration is considering a total ban on imports of Russian aluminum

The Biden administration is considering a total ban on Russian aluminum imports in response to an escalation of Russian military action in Ukraine, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

The White House is now mulling several scenarios, including a total ban, which could be imposed by raising purchasing prices, or imposing sanctions on Russia’s main aluminum producer, Rusal.

Bloomberg has learned of this from knowledgeable sources in the White House. According to them, the White House has been discussing these options for several weeks.

At the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the White House delayed imposing sanctions against Russian aluminum, fearing that it could disrupt the global supply chain across industries. But with Russia’s aggression in Ukraine escalating, it is clear that economic pressure on Russia needs to increase, Bloomberg sources said.

“We are always looking at all options. At the moment there is no change in this issue,” a White House spokesman told Reuters.
