Simone Biles received the highest score in the all-around during Olympic qualification

Gymnast Simone Biles scored a 59.566 in the all-around competition during Olympic qualifying at the Paris Olympics on Sunday despite a calf muscle problem.

U.S. gymnastics team coach Cecile Lundy said the problem surfaced two weeks ago and characterized it as minor. Lundy said the issue of Biles’ suspension from competition has not been discussed.

After a terrific performance on beam, Biles apparently sprained her foot during warm-ups. She left the floor with U.S. team doctor Marcia Faustin, a scene reminiscent of the one that played out three years ago in Tokyo, when Biles withdrew from the team all-around after a bad jump.

This time, however, the 27-year-old returned to the court a few minutes later with a bandage on her leg and said she felt something in her calf.

Nevertheless, she performed brilliantly.

Biles had the highest score on floor exercise and vault of the two subgroups and will likely maintain her lead for the rest of the day, allowing her to try to add to her record of seven Olympic medals.

The only adjustment she made was her decision not to perform the unique uneven bars element she submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation on Friday. Instead, she performed her usual routine and scored a 14.333. In doing so, she was careful not to load her leg during the run-up.

As she waved to the crowd, Biles celebrated the fact that the U.S. women’s team of five gymnasts had climbed to the top of the leaderboard, as expected.

The U.S. athletes scored 172.296 points, well ahead of their rivals after two rounds, and are looking to “bounce back” after finishing second at the Olympics in Russia three years ago.

Now the question is a different one: will Biles’ leg become a recurring problem? The team final is on Tuesday and the women’s all-around final is on Thursday.

The stands were filled with celebrities. Tom Cruise posed for selfies while waiting for Biles to come out. Snoop Dogg sat in the front row, while Ariana Grande, Jessica Chastain, John Legend and Anna Wintour were also in the audience.

Athletes from across the Olympic spectrum have said they want to get in on the most exciting gymnast competition of all time, which could be the final event in Biles’ unprecedented career.
